strobiliformis is a small succulent which grows in segmented stems that resemble pine cones. It suckers profusely and is very easy to grow by just knocking off one of the “cones” and replanting it in the ground. A mature plant resembles a vertical stack of pine cones.

A great option for identification is an app put together by my friend Jacki at Drought Smart Plants called Succulent ID. You can look at different genera of succulents or search through photos based on characteristics of your succulent. She also has an ebook just for identifying Sempervivums which you can get here.

Minimal water is needed. Pine Cone Cactus is drought-resistant and grows best in hot dry areas. Overwatering could lead to root rot. This plant prefers hot temperatures but it will tolerate a very wide range of temperatures.

Succulents stretch out when they aren't getting enough sunlight. You'll first notice the succulent start to turn and bend toward the light source. Then as it continues to grow it will get taller with more space between the leaves. Most of the time the leaves will be smaller and lighter in color than normal.

The best way to tell whether your succulent is being over or underwatered is by the appearance of the leaves. An underwatered plant will have wrinkly, shriveled up leaves whereas an overwatered plant will have soft, mushy, almost translucent leaves.
